For some reason, even when I turn in sketches like the one below, with Nicol Bolas goosing an angel, the art director of Magic doesn't immediately fire me. For this, and so many other reasons, Jeremy Jarvis rocks. I often have grand schemes battling in my head for each painting I start. Usually, that makes for mess, frustration, and an addiction to caffiene that would worry Keith Richards. But in this case, I feel like the imps in my brain all worked together, like you'd imagine they might in an NC-17 version of Santa's Workshop. And one of my favorite of my own work was born. If you're interested in the process: I wanted a stark contrast between the light angel, and the darkness of Bolas. So the main scheme was black eclipsing white. I didn't want it devoid of color, and so I decided to accent her with gold, and corrupt it in places by it's opposite purple. So you get that sense of change, intrusion, and loss. And amazingly enough, my scheme seemed to work this time. Hooray! -For Magic: the Gathering, directed by Jeremy Jarvis. |
